The experience caters to all ages, offering sit-down fun for the entire family. We’ve broken down everything you need to know about Muppet Vision 3D at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, from the line to the story, to where to get a meal after the event.
Muppet Vision 3D Overview
Muppet Vision 3D is an attraction for all ages and sizes. The immersive experience features an interactive line, a pre-show movie, and a multi-sensory, 4k live show. The attraction includes onscreen musical numbers and immersive, live-in theater special effects.
Visitors can expect to enjoy 4D in-theater effects, including audio-animatronics, lighting, projections, smoke, soap bubbles, and live performers.
Attraction History
Muppet Vision 3D is based around Jim Henson’s beloved, ground-breaking “Muppet Show,” which delighted audiences with its wry sense of humor and bombastic visual jokes between 1976 and 1981.
Disney initially launched the attraction as Jim Henson’s Muppet Vision 3D on May 16, 1991.
The collaboration is a joint project between Walt Disney Imagineering and Jim Henson
Muppet Vision 3D includes a unique treat for muppet enthusiasts, the final film directed by Jim Henson. Those raised with the original muppet crew and sesame street will struggle to suppress a few tears upon hearing Henson give voice to Kermit the Frog one final time.
Tragically, Jim Henson passed away in 1990 before he could see the attraction’s debut.
Muppet Vision 3D Experience
Muppet Vision 3D provides guests with an immersive and fun experience, starting as soon as visitors join the line.
The experience includes fun visual gags, treats for all of the senses, and wry pop culture jokes.
The Queue
The Muppet Vision 3D fun begins the moment you get in line. The queue leads visitors through wacky scientist Doctor Bunson Honeydew’s lab.
Guests pass office doors; keep your eyes peeled for the imaginative and silly job titles. You’ll also see parody film posters for:
- The Bride of Froggen-schwein
- The Poseidon Adventure
- SuperBeaker II
Right before entering the attraction, guests enter the Muppet prop room, filled with boxes covered in clever and funny labels.
This antechamber houses three television screens that air the muppet-starring pre-show. This is where guests grab their 3D glasses for the attraction.
The Preshow
The 12-minute pre-show movie shows Kermit’s right-hand man, Scooter, trying to prepare the stage for the Muppet Show.
Chaos erupts around him as muppet performers rehearse their acts and get ready to perform. Sam the Eagle, the muppet’s resident curmudgeon, provides a safety talk, indicating the impending madness.
The preshow is a powerful promotional tool. Disney has used Muppet Vision 3D to provide early glimpses at projects, including:
- Trong: Legacy
- Frankenweenie
- Oz the Great and Powerful
Disney alters the preshow to promote whatever Disney or Muppet property is most current.
Muppet Vision 3D Attraction
Once guests pass through the line and pre-show, it’s time to enjoy the main attraction. Visitors enter a replica of the classic Muppet Theater from the Muppet Show. The seats are the same red velvet chairs featured in the beloved program.
All your favorite muppets await behind the curtain, ready to entertain and perform in eye-popping 3D.
The Muppet Vision 3D show is a treat for all of your senses, not just a visual delight. Expect to feel blasts of air, squirts of water, and the pop of soap bubbles.
The actual show features all of the muppet’s signature chaos. Muppet fans and newbies alike will delight at the animatronics sharing the theater with them, including Statler and Waldorf cracking wise throughout the show. A penguin orchestra provides musical entertainment, and the Swedish Chef tries his hand at film projection.
Muppet Vision 3D’s Premise
Muppet Vision 3D follows a classic, chaotic muppet storyline. Kermit leads visitors through a Muppet Studio tour. Guests observe their favorite felt friends preparing new sketch performances to showcase the latest muppet 3D technology.
Of course, it wouldn’t be the muppets if it went smoothly, and Dr. Bunson Honeydew and his trusty assistant Beaker accidentally cause chaos by releasing the doctor’s three-dimensional sprite, Waldo, a new character unique to the attraction.
Kermit and his friends struggle to keep the show on track. The attraction features songs from Miss Piggy, jokes from Fozzy, commentary from Statler and Waldorf, and chaos from everyone.
Muppet Vision 3D Hidden Treats
Muppet Vision 3D includes many hidden pleasures for attentive visitors and some secrets to discover.
The attraction is jam-packed with wordplay and visual gags. The props and set decorations reward observant guests with myriad puns and show business jokes. Like the Muppet Show itself, the attraction features gags younger audiences won’t understand.
Look up, and you’ll note a net full of jello. A net full of jello said quickly aloud, sounds like Annette Funicello, a cute gag certain to pass right over the heads of the five-year-olds in the crowd.
Keep your eyes peeled for a sign informing guests that staff is away and visitors should use the key under the mat. Many of us are used to assuming we should keep our hands to ourselves in attractions, but this is the muppets. Check under the rug; to discover there actually is a key waiting there!
Even the bathrooms are wacky fun; Gonzo’s Royal Flush restrooms are muppet themed.
Muppet Vision 3D Detail
The attraction is located on Grand Avenue, which is its third location after Streets of America and Muppets Courtyard.
The show lasts only 17 minutes, however, paired with the preshow, the attraction lasts 30 minutes.
The Facility
Muppet Vision 3D is entirely indoors and climate controlled, so you’ll enjoy the attraction comfortably no matter the season. The facility is heated during the winter and air-conditioned in the summer, so it provides a comfortable and pleasant reprieve if you’ve been sweating through your Disney visit.
Attraction Wait Time
No one wants to wait too long for an attraction, even for the Muppets. Fortunately, Muppet Vision 3D has a large capacity and quickly moves crowds along.
The maximum wait time is around lunch, but generally speaking, the line isn’t terribly long or likely to last more than one show. The wait time is about 12 minutes. While the line is often long, the theater seats quite a few guests, expediting the wait time.
Accessibility
Muppet Vision 3D strives to ensure every guest can enjoy the experience. The attraction provides accommodations to ensure accessibility, including:
- Video captioning
- Reflective captioning
- Assistive Listening devices
- Audio description devices
- Wheelchair access
The muppet theater comfortably seats 584 eager audience members. Muppet Vision 3D is not fast-pass accessible.
Muppet Vision 3D Things to be Aware of
Though Muppet Vision 3D is an all-ages attraction, parents may want to consider a few details in determining whether or not the experience is suitable for their family.
The attraction gets pretty loud-it’s the muppets, and the muppets are chaotic! Some children may find the attraction to be a sensory overload.
Removing the 3D glasses and closing their eyes may help overwhelmed children regain their calm.
Additionally, Sweetums is one of the in-person characters. While Sweetums is as gentle as his name suggests, he is very large and potentially frightening to some children. Sit near the back if you think a monster, however friendly, maybe too much for your child to handle. Sweetums only interact with the front rows.
Keep in mind this attraction requires 3D glasses. These necessary ride components may be complicated for guests with prescription glasses. Attempting to look beyond the effect instead of directly at it often helps.
After the Attraction
Guests are sure to build up an appetite after all of those wacky muppet hijinks. Luckily, PizzeRizzo is right across the street. Don’t be deterred just because a rat runs the restaurant; Rizzo is a pretty sophisticated rodent and knows his way around a slice of pie.
Visitors looking for souvenirs don’t need to go far. The Stage 1 Company Store, located immediately to the left of muppet vision 3D, features plenty of muppet products for all ages to help you commemorate your experience.
