Who Needs a Passport to Go to the Bahamas?
Pretty much everyone needs a passport to go to the Bahamas in the Caribbean.
If you are a U.S. citizen, you will need a passport to get into the Bahamas. Regardless of your age, home state, or other demographic information, you will need a passport book to travel to the Bahamas.
Not only will you need your passport, but the Bahamas requires two blank pages in your passport book to receive their entry stamp. This policy means that if you have less than two pages available, you will need to renew your passport before you set out for the Bahamas.
To be valid for travel to and from the Bahamas, you will need to make sure that your passport does not expire within six months of your departure date. If your passport expiration date is within that window, you will need to renew your passport before your trip. Keep reading for more information on how to renew your passport and expedite the delivery of your new passport.
In addition to your passport, the U.S. State Department advises you to bring proof of your departure from the Bahamas. You can check out more of the State Department’s recommendations for traveling to the Bahamas on their website.
Can I Use My Passport Card?
Many savvy travelers opt to purchase a passport card instead of a passport book. While doing this can save you a nice chunk of change, many locations will not permit you to cross their borders unless you have a full-fledged passport book.
Unfortunately for passport card-holders, the Bahamas is one of those places. If you are planning a trip to the Bahamas, you will need to show a passport book to enter, not a passport card. The exception to this rule is if you are traveling by cruise ship. If you are visiting the Bahamas via a cruise that starts and ends in the United States, you only need a passport card to complete your journey.
Although you are technically able to use your passport card if your cruise begins and ends in the United States, we caution you against traveling to the Bahamas without your complete passport book.
We recommend that you keep your passport book in your possession if an unforeseen event forces you to leave the Bahamas via air instead of your cruise ship. If this situation were to arise, you would need to show your complete passport book to board a plane back to the United States.
As a general rule, you should know that you cannot travel anywhere by air with a passport card. If you plan to fly internationally, you will need to show your passport book instead of a passport card.
What Are the Passport Requirements for My Travel Method?
The passport requirements for the Bahamas are slightly different depending on how you travel to get there. Ensure that you know what is required of your specific trip to avoid entry issues on your way there.
Traveling by Plane
If you are flying to the Bahamas, you will need your passport book. As mentioned above, a passport card will not be adequate identification for your air trip to the Bahamas or any other trip via airplane.
Traveling by Cruise
Cruise ships are one of the most popular ways to travel to and from the Bahamas. They provide a comfortable way to travel, many amenities, and a way to see many different locations on one vacation.
If you are traveling by cruise ship, you will still need a passport to enter the Bahamas.
If your cruise starts or ends outside the United States, you need your entire passport book to enter the Bahamas. As mentioned earlier, be sure to check that you have at least two blank pages remaining in your passport to receive the Bahamas entry stamp.
If your cruise starts and ends in the United States, you will still need a passport, but you can use a passport card instead of a complete passport book. This rule is good news for those of you who might not have renewed your passport book, have run out of pages or opted to purchase the passport card to save money.
Traveling by Private Boat
If you are traveling to the Bahamas on a private boat, you will still need to show your passport upon arrival. You will need to have your whole passport book with two available blank pages, just like if you were traveling to the country via airplane.
In addition to your passport book, you will also need the following documents upon arrival in the Bahamas by private boat:
- A completed Bahamas Customs Clearance Form
- A Bahamas Immigration Card
Upon arrival, you will need to head to the nearest Point of Entry to clear Customs and Immigration. The current guidelines (as of November 2021) state that you must fly the yellow quarantine flag upon your arrival at the port and remain on board until immigration clears your vessel. Until that happens, only the captain may leave the boat.
Those arriving via private boat will also pay an entry fee to cover permits and departure taxes for up to three people. There is an additional fee for anyone else on board to cover their departure taxes. Before setting sail for the Bahamas, you can review the current guidelines on the Association of Bahamas Marinas’ website.
How Does COVID Impact My Trip to the Bahamas?
In addition to your passport, you will also need a Health Visa to visit the Bahamas (as of November 2021). You can check for updates and apply for a Bahamas health visa on the Bahamas website.
All travelers need to apply for a health visa before traveling to the Bahamas, regardless of vaccination status. After creating your profile, you will submit proof of your vaccination card or evidence of a recent COVID test before receiving an approved travel health visa. You will need to add any travelers under the age of 17 to a guardian profile instead of their own.
After you submit your information, you will need to pay a fee to cover the health insurance costs of the Bahamas. These fees vary by your vaccination status, length of stay, and country of origin. You can check these amounts and other COVID restrictions on the Bahamas health visa webpage.
COVID also impacts the amount of time you will need to receive a passport after renewal or apply for a new one. You can check the currently estimated timelines for obtaining a new passport with your local passport facility. Read more about getting your new passport and finding your facility below.

- Original proof of citizenship document, such as your birth certificate
- An acceptable photo I.D., such as your driver’s license
- A photocopy of BOTH SIDES of your citizenship document and photo ID

- Your payment
Note that you will need to have your passport photos taken before arriving at the passport application center for most states. Many post offices and pharmacies offer these services at a minimal cost.

You will need to renew your passport before your trip to the Bahamas in any of the following situations:
- Your passport is expired
- Your passport will expire within six months of your departure from the Bahamas
- Your passport does not have two blank pages available.
You can renew your passport if it was issued after your 16th birthday, within the last 15 years, and was not damaged, lost, or stolen. If you have changed your name, you will need to show a legal name change document to renew your passport. Otherwise, you will need to apply for a new one.
You can renew your passport via postal mail by submitting a passport renewal application. You will need the following items to renew your passport:
- Your most recent passport
- A hard copy of your completed passport application (typed online or handwritten)
- A passport photo that meets these requirements
- Your payment
- Legal name change documents for any name change since your most recent passport
The Passport Services Office will return any official documents you send in the mail with your application.
Expedited Services for Your Passport
If you need your passport sooner than seven weeks from the date you are applying, you will need to use the expedited passport services to ensure that you receive your passport in time.
You will need to apply and request expedited services in person at a passport acceptance facility. Expedited services will cost an extra $60 on top of the fees already in place for obtaining your new passport. If you need your passport within two weeks of travel, you must show proof of immediate international travel.
Passports for Children
If you are traveling with a minor, they will also need a passport to enter the Bahamas. Most children (under the age of 16) will need to apply for their passports in person with both parents present. If a parent cannot be present, they will need to provide a statement of consent or evidence of why they are not present at the time of the application.
