One of the most exciting things about heading away on vacation is the opportunity to eat at a bunch of new places, whether that’s dining in or grabbing a takeout. And without a doubt one of the favorite foods of American’s is pizza!
The US is home to some of the best pizza places in the world, there’s no denying that and within the country, you will find more than 70,000 restaurants serving them, and that’s not even counting delivery services.
To some people, this may not mean a lot but according research, the average American eats 45 slices of pizza each year. For many, it’s way more than this.
With eating pizza part of many a family vacation, we wanted to know; where in the country has the best choice of pizza places available?
We’ve taken a deep dive into the data to find out, analyzing the number of pizza restaurants on Tripadvisor and the number of delivery and takeout options on Grubhub in the US’ 100 biggest cities and calculating how many each one has per 100,000 residents.

The US Cities with the Most Pizza Places per 100k Residents
Whilst the likes of New York, Los Angeles and Chicago have the highest number of pizza places overall, this comes as no surprise given that they’re the country’s three biggest cities.
On the hunt to find the US’ pizza capitals, we turned to Tripadvisor and Grubhub to find the total number of pizza restaurants and to Grubhub for the total number of takeout and delivery options in the 100 biggest cities.
Using this data, alongside each city’s population, we calculated the number of pizza places per 100k residents; shining a light on where in the country has the most options available.
And we can reveal that the cities with the most pizza places, the US’ pizza capitals, as:
- Orlando, Florida
- Plano, Texas
- St. Louis, Missouri
- Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
- Scottsdale, Arizona

Florida‘s tourism hotspot and home to Walt Disney World Resort, Universal Resort Orlando and a whole host of other fantastic attractions, tourists are spoiled for choice when it comes to pizza options in the city.
With a staggering 126 pizza places per 100k residents, 364 in total, there’s never going to be a restaurant or takeout that’s far from where you’re staying.

When you think of pizza, Plano probably won’t be the first place that comes to mind, but with 120 different restaurants, takeout and delivery options available, it’s right up there amongst America’s pizza capitals!

3. St. Louis, MO
St. Louis is home to a 288 pizza places, which works out to 97 per 100k residents. This means plenty of choice whether that’s for a restaurant, delivery or a takeout.

In Pittsburgh, you’ll find 288 pizza places across restaurants, delivery and takeout options, which means there’s 96 choices for every 100k residents in the city.

5. Scottsdale, AZ
Scottsdale is home to 94 pizza places per 100k residents, an impressive achievement given that it comes in as the US’ 83rd biggest city, with a population of 263k. In the city, you’ll find a total of 247 pizza restaurants, takeout and delivery options.

Methodology
We collected the number of pizza places listed for each of the US’ 100 biggest cities from Tripadvisor and the number of takeout and delivery options listed on Grubhub on 11th August 2021.
The population of each city was collected from Wikipedia to allow the number of pizza places per 100k residents to be calculated.
